Victorian Villa | Chesterfield

Status: Completed

Location: Chesterfield

Project Scope: A large single-storey extension, internal works to the existing kitchen/dining area, and additional works to form a new ground floor toilet and access.

Our clients approached us to help them create a large house extension with a new family kitchen and open-plan living space that would seamlessly transition between the interior and garden.

They also wanted to create something modern and contemporary that would become a statement and contrast the existing Victorian architecture of their home, creating a luxury space for everyday living all year round.

Design Process

An essential consideration was our clients wanted lots of glass to help immerse them in their gardens all year round. However we were concerned that their home could turn into a furnace with their southwest-facing garden during the summer.

The solution is a large overhanging roof that makes a strong visual statement and offers practical solar shading during the warmer summer months. This design allows the glazing to be opened entirely to the garden, successfully blurring the lines inside and out, creating a great entertaining and living space.

The solution was to create a large extension flat roof that overhangs the main internal living space, providing shade and large areas of covered outside living.

We further enhanced the connection with the garden by lowering some existing floors, stepping down from a games/dining room into the new kitchen area that then leads onto the family living space and out into the garden.

Using the same light-coloured porcelain tiles both inside and out further adds to the creation of space, with the bi-fold doors opening fully to create one large, seamless and luxurious room.

Externally, engineering brickwork has been selected to contrast the warm red bricks of the existing house, whilst the modern flat roof form creates a contemporary reimagining of a traditional Summer garden roof, providing a clear definition between old and new.

The result is a spectacular addition to an impressive period home in Chesterfield that epitomises modern-day family living requirements without compromising the integrity of this historic period property.
