Site Assessment

The site sits within an extremely flat site surrounded by open countryside in all directions, with far reaching views.

There was an existing property on the northern side of the site adjacent the main road with a sweeping driveway that came into the site from the north west corner and the main residential curtilage to the south of the property.

The site also benefitted from an existing planning permission previously obtained by our clients, but they had decided that they wanted to start the design process again to make the most of the site’s potential.

Design Process

We started by discussing the existing planning approved scheme to understand why this didn’t work for our clients and this also opened up discussions and ideas to solve these and make the new home really work for our clients.

We established that the best location for the new home would be broadly in the same location as the existing property as this would allow for the main garden spaces to be south facing and away from the main road, whilst the main entrance should be on the western side, to engage with visitors when they approached along the driveway.

Having established the siting and general orientation the design evolved through a series of designs and review meetings with the final scheme providing extensive glazing overlooking the garden and longer distance views to the south, with a subtle palette of red brickwork to the front and black timber with feature western red cedar gables to the rear.

This provides the bungalow with a subtle yet modern design whilst ensuring it also blends in with the surroundings.
