Architect's Brief

We were appointed as architects for a challenging, yet rewarding project in the Thurgoland area of Sheffield.

The brief was extend and renovate an existing, stone property in the countryside into a contemporary home by whilst still respecting the surrounding context.

Design Solution

The design for this proposal had to be carefully considered to respect its immediate context. The house needed to be reconfigured to create a new entrance which reflected the way the property is being used.  The client also required more bedroom space at first floor.

The solution was to create a contemporary addition to the property which respected the existing house.  A stone façade is continued on the new extension, separated by a modern dark grey timber cladding 'link' to highlight how the existing and proposed sit together.  The proposal replicates a rural architectural style, using contemporary language and materials.

A new two storey extension is created on one side to form a new highly glazed, double height entrance, relocating the internal stair to address the new entrance.  A new first floor extension is formed on the opposite side of the house, over an existing single storey element, using the same style to form a new master bedroom suite.  The internal layout has been reconfigured to make better use of the space, creating open plan living areas to suit the individual family needs.
