Location: Ranmoor / Broomhill, Sheffield

Project Scope: A kitchen/dining area. New utility and fully accessible shower room.

A stone-built single-storey house extension on the edge of Ranmoor and Broomhill.

Design Process

This project sits on the edge of Ranmoor and Broomhill, two of Sheffield’s most characterful neighbourhoods. The house is built from stone and full of original charm, but like many older homes, the layout no longer suited the family's needs.

The brief was straightforward: create a better kitchen and dining space, add a utility room, and include a fully accessible shower room. But the result has gone far beyond just the practical.

We’ve always enjoyed working with traditional buildings. There’s something special about giving them a new lease of life, helping them meet the needs of modern families while still respecting the character that made them so loved in the first place.

For us, it’s not about pastiche or contrast — it’s about finding the right balance and letting the original building guide the design while introducing new ideas that bring comfort, practicality and joy.

The extension is single-storey, built from locally sourced stone to sit comfortably alongside the existing house. Traditional materials and craftsmanship are matched with a fresh, contemporary palette inside, where clean lines, soft colours and thoughtful finishes create a calm and inviting atmosphere.

Because the extension faces north, natural light was key. We added rooflights and large glazed doors to flood the space with daylight. The new kitchen and living area now feel open, social and connected to the garden: somewhere the whole family can enjoy, whether cooking, relaxing or entertaining.

During the early stages on-site, we uncovered an old well tucked just beneath the surface. Rather than remove it, we chose to celebrate it. It now forms part of the hard landscaping: a subtle reminder of the site’s history and a nice talking point within the courtyard garden.

This is a quiet project in many ways, but one that shows how well-considered design can make a real difference to how a home works and feels. It respects the past, responds to the present, and hopefully, will be enjoyed long into the future.
