0025 / Introducing our ‘Traditional Homes with a Twist’
Why We Created This Growing Collection.
Broomhall Garden Villa: Total home renovation and extension
Breaking the Myth
At Brightman Clarke, we often hear a familiar assumption. Because The Works recently won the Homebuilding & Renovating Award for Best Extension in partnership with The Times, and The Sanctuary was shortlisted for its own award, both with strong contemporary lines, people sometimes imagine we only design “modern” homes.
The reality is different. We are client-driven architects and designers. Our role is to listen, interpret and shape homes around the people who live in them.
Traditional Homes with a Twist
That is why we created our Traditional Homes with a Twist collection.
This series celebrates familiar building types such as cottages, manors, barns and farmhouses, reimagined for contemporary living. Each project respects its heritage while solving the practical challenges of modern family life.
Examples in Practice
Hillside: once a tired farmhouse, now redesigned to honour its history while bringing in light, flow and new bedrooms for a growing family.
The Stone House: a historic cottage in Tickhill, balanced with a contemporary extension created in collaboration with a leading interior designer.
Broomhall Garden Villa: a Victorian villa in the Broomhall Conservation Area, comprehensively renovated and expanded while restoring its original character.
What We Mean by a “Twist”
“It’s never about gimmicks. It’s about craftsmanship, problem-solving and intelligent design.”
The “twist” lies in how we use design to make homes more liveable. That means improving flow, framing views and creating spaces that work just as well for a busy weekday breakfast as for evening entertaining.
Timeless, Not Trend-Led
Our Traditional Homes with a Twist approach avoids pastiche. We draw on traditional materials and proportions but combine them with inventive layouts and refined detailing. The result is architecture that feels authentic, characterful and timeless, whether inspired by Georgian symmetry, Victorian brick or rural vernacular.
Looking Ahead
We are launching this new section with six projects of different scales to showcase our work, with more to follow as professional photography and CGIs are completed.
To Be Completely Candid
A ‘traditional’ leather wingback chair looks as good today as it did when made (with patina even better), and a ‘modern’ Eames chair is just the same.
Put either in the right architectural setting, and they both look extraordinary. That balance between timelessness and context is what we strive for in every home we help design with our clients.
“Fashion changes, but style endures.”
